This piece, which is titled "We Are All African", was inspired by the wonderful work of 'Mapula'. These women form a collective of South African embroiderers who stitch their stories into beautiful and life affirming tapestries, the sale of which provides them and their families with much needed financial support.
The Aids epidemic in South Africa decimated an entire generation; elders have been obliged to assume responsibility for bringing up the abandoned children. In this work Funerary figures represent the lost, while the protective caryatid in the centre valiantly attempts to capture and restrain the virus in her stone basket. The animal pairs suggest the cradle of civilization, from which it is now known, we all originate.
